History

The Colombo Library was established in 1925 merging the two libraries; Colombo Library and the Pettah Library.[1] At the beginning the library had 3 departments, The Reading Room, the Lending Room & the Reference Library. It had seven members on the staff, with late Mr. S.C Blok as the Librarian.[2] From 1935 to 1990 it was at Sirinivasa before shifting to the new building at Sir Marcus Fernando mawatha.[3]

Timeline
  • In 2016, Library was fully automated with Koha FOSS Library Management Library System with a consultancy of Open University of Sri Lanka.
  • In 2017, The Digital Libraries Project was launched at Colombo Public library by the Information Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) in collaboration with National Library and Documentation Services Board.[4] In March 2019, the Colombo Digital Library officially launched.[5]
  • In 2020, The Library System was upgraded the latest versions under the guidance with The Open University of Sri Lanka
