The force was established through the Nauru Police Force Act of 26 January in 1972, which has been amended several times.[3]

The NPF is divided into 5 units.
- Professional Standards Unit

 - Learning and Development Unit
 - Operations Support Unit
 
The Nauru Police Force has the following ranks, modeled after the Australian Federal Police:[4]

Weapons
    
Police in Nauru is not armed, although in 2003 the police was found to possess 23 weapons.[5]
